There are moments in our lives that we never forget, moments when the trials and tribulations of the grind melt away and all we have is the person in our arms. We sought out the most romantic photos we could find that captured that instance of pure joy… And then questioned it.
What is love, yes, I know it was a song that turned into an SNL sketch and finally a horribly embarrassing movie. The deeper question lies in those moments we spend with each other that can’t be explained. Sometimes they are at the beginning of a relationship, sometimes they are at the end. They are always with us though.

A Chemical Reaction
According to sciencedaily.com, “Falling in love causes our body to release a flood of feel-good chemicals that trigger specific physical reactions,” yeah, you kinda knew that already. Is that chemical reaction the beginning of something deeper or is it simply the manifestation of what we feel as love? I never really want to admit that I am just an animal and driven more by instinct than thought. Just about every part of our physiology is on auto-pilot, we don’t have to think or know how to digest food, what makes us think we know the mechanics of love intuitively any more than the mechanics of digestion? It’s the hubris of humanity.
A Passionate Commitment
Setting the concept of love being a product of pure physiological response aside, is it in fact more? Does loving someone mean we are connecting on a level that science just can’t explain? When I look at photos of couples in love, I don’t just see two beings together, I feel that connection. It’s more of a belief and a guttural feeling than something I can prove. Society has tried its best to draw lines around it with concepts like marriage and even couples, but those are merely constructs to keep society civil and encourage creating a family unit. When you pull those things apart to their barest elements, what is left?
