The Incomplete Guide to Being A Single Woman in Los Angeles

Being a Single Woman in Los Angeles can be, well shi%%. It can also be amazing given the right ingredients. Here’s our guide to living La Vida Loca without getting too loca.

This guide is incomplete because, well, it is. There’s a lot of ground to cover, but here’s our starting point…

So Many People, Yet So Lonely

There are thirteen million people in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. You’d think that would make dating and socializing incredibly easy…you would be wrong. Living here can incredibly lonely. That loneliness often leads to stupid decisions like going out with friends from work for happy hour. It’s easy because we’re out with people we know (sort of) and hassle free, until you get completely shit-faced with your boss’s boss and tell ’em what you really think. All my friends who moved here from New York have told me that people are colder, with more of an agenda and generally more dickish in Southern Cali. I hate to admit it, but it’s true.

Get out and … Just Get Out!

The best way to combat loneliness here is to get engaged with other human beings.

Exercise Classes

Yoga and spinning classes seem like a stereotypical L.A. thing to do, but are a great way to meet other women and singles who have just moved here. Soul Cycle just opened up in Brentwood and YogaWorks in Santa Monica has a lot of fans! Even if you don’t meet anyone while you’re out, the endorphins will make you feel better and burning the calories will help you look better!

Volunteering

So many of my friends volunteer as a way of relieving white guilt and feeling closer to their fellow man. LAWorks has a fantastic calendar that includes lots of opportunities to help the community all organized by day. We like the work that HomeBoy Industries does to help former gang members get off the streets. The Midnight Mission also has great programs to help the homeless. Whatever you decide to do, research thoroughly and find out in advance what your time commitment will be.

MeetUps

The variety of opportunities to meet up with like-minded people in Los Angeles is extraordinary. Whether your interests are in coding, pugs, travelling, or just drinking, there is probably a meetup group for it. There are the obvious sites like Meetup and the not so obvious sites like EventBrite.

To date or not to date?

This is the central question to most women in Los Angeles. Sometimes avoiding dating altogether is better than the alternative. I’ve yet to meet a guy I liked at a bar that was more than a one or two night arrangement. The scene can intimidating, but it’s gotten better thanks to the internet. The key to dating here is safety. Watch your back and be careful, this is Los Angeles after all!
